From Rs 150 crore to Rs 30 crore? 'Toxic' OTT deal reportedly takes a massive hit
Yash-starrer 'Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown-Ups' appears to be facing trouble beyond its theatrical run. The film, which arrived in cinemas on August 26 amid considerable anticipation, reportedly struggled at the box office and is now said to have seen a sharp drop in the value of its post-theatrical streaming rights.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, an OTT platform had earlier offered Rs 150 crore for the film's digital rights. However, following its underwhelming theatrical performance, the amount being discussed by digital players has reportedly fallen significantly.
OTT offer reportedly sees steep decline
The report claims that the makers were seeking more than Rs 200 crore for the OTT rights, expecting a strong theatrical run to drive up the film's post-release value.
“The Toxic team had an offer of Rs 150 crore from a leading platform, but the demand from the team was a lot higher, north of Rs. 200 crore. Yash was confident that the film would do blockbuster business in theatres, and that in turn, would boost the post-theatrical OTT prices to Rs. 200 crore plus. But the results are exactly opposite, as the digital players are now offering an amount as low as Rs 30 crore for the post-theatrical streaming rights for all languages," a source cited by the entertainment portal claimed.
Makers consider new cut for OTT release
The reported drop in the streaming offer has also led the makers to consider changing the film before its digital release.
“The makers are now contemplating a completely new edit for the digital version, with the hope of fetching a bigger amount than what’s on the table. The discussions are underway to figure out a way to reduce the losses, one of which is a new cut for OTT," the source added.
What is 'Toxic' about?
Directed around a gangster caught between loyalty, morality and redemption, 'Toxic' is set in post-independence Goa, against a backdrop of violence and jealousy.
The film features Yash alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth in key roles.
The official plot summary describes the story as follows, "A gangster navigates the complexities of loyalty, morality, and the struggle for personal redemption in a post-independence Goa where violence and jealousy reign. With its atmospheric world, brutal action sequences, and morally conflicted characters, the film explores the price one must pay for love and for finding redemption amidst the darkness."
