From mythology to creature comedy: Karan Johar's big plans for Dharma Productions
Dharma Productions is reportedly preparing to venture into new territory with two big-budget creature films, signalling a shift towards high-concept storytelling and large-scale theatrical spectacles. The production house, led by Karan Johar, is planning a mythological creature feature and a creature comedy, with shooting for both projects expected to begin towards the end of 2026.
According to a report by Pinkvilla, the two films are expected to go on floors by December, although details about their casts remain under wraps.
Dharma Productions plans two creature films
A source quoted in the report said Karan Johar was looking to diversify the production house's film slate with projects across different genres.
“Karan Johar is diversifying the genres for his banner, Dharma Productions. He is set to take the two films on floors by December 2026. One of them is touted to be a huge creature feature with mythological undertones, and the other is a high-concept creature comedy," the report said.
The report also stated that both films would be announced through a video presentation on the big screen alongside ‘Ramayana’ during Diwali 2026.
While the makers have yet to reveal casting details, one of the projects will reportedly be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sandeep Modi. Known for directing projects such as ‘Aarya’ and ‘The Night Manager’, Modi is expected to helm an ambitious feature film.
“It's an ambitious feature film, and the studio is placing big bets on the plot,” the report said.
Karan Johar expands beyond familiar genres
Dharma Productions has traditionally been associated with romantic dramas and family entertainers. However, its upcoming slate indicates an interest in exploring different genres and storytelling formats.
Projects such as ‘Kao’, ‘Radha Krishna’ and ‘Gadadhari Bheem’ are also part of the production house's reported lineup. The two creature-based films would further expand its focus on ambitious theatrical projects.
‘Udta Teer’ and other upcoming releases
Meanwhile, Dharma Productions is preparing for the release of ‘Udta Teer’, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan. Directed by Aakash Kaushik, the film follows an amnesiac Pakistani spy who wakes up believing he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on October 23.
The banner also has ‘Kuku Ki Kundali’, ‘Nagzilla’ and ‘Lag Ja Gale’ lined up for release in 2027.
