'Fast & Furious' gets TV series, set to premiere on Peacock in 2028

Peacock has greenlit a new 'Fast & Furious' scripted series for 2028, with Vin Diesel among the executive producers

The "Fast & Furious" franchise is expanding to television with American streaming service Peacock greenlighting a new scripted series based on the long-running action film series.

The yet-to-be-titled series, which will debut in 2028, will be written by Mike Daniels, known for "Sons of Anarchy", "Shades of Blue" and "The Rockford Files", and Wolfe Coleman. The duo will serve as co-showrunners, pilot writers and executive producers, reported Variety.

Vin Diesel, who has headlined the franchise as protagonist Dominic Toretto since the first film in 2001, will executive produce the series alongside One Race's Sam Vincent, Original Film's Neal H Moritz and Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan.

Vin Diesel returns as executive producer

The series was first announced as being in development by Diesel during NBCUniversal's upfront presentation in May.

At the time, the actor said the filmmakers had spent years considering how to expand the stories and legacy characters into television.

Series to arrive alongside new film

The planned 2028 premiere will coincide with the release of "Fast Forever", the next film in the franchise, which is scheduled to hit theatres on March 17, 2028.

Louis Leterrier, who directed "Fast X", is returning to direct the film.

How the franchise began

The "Fast & Furious" franchise began with "The Fast and the Furious" in 2001, starring Diesel as Dominic Toretto, the late Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty and Jordana Brewster as Mia.

The franchise has so far released 10 films with the most recent instalment, "Fast X", coming out in 2023. It has earned more than USD 7 billion worldwide over its 25-year history.

‘Fast & Furious’ has been on TV before

The series previously made its way to television through the animated show "Fast & Furious: Spy Racers", which ran for six seasons on Netflix from 2019 to 2021.
