Daler Mehndi breaks silence on Uttarakhand concert row, thanks fans for support

Singer Daler Mehndi on Sunday broke his silence following the controversy surrounding his performance at a cultural event in Uttarakhand, expressing gratitude to his family, brother Mika Singh, members of the entertainment industry and fans for supporting him during a difficult period.

In a social media post shared on the occasion of Diwali, the singer reflected on the affection and encouragement he had received after the incident, which triggered widespread debate over the treatment of performers at public events.

Mehndi said the support extended to him had deeply affected him and that he was struggling to express the extent of his gratitude.

Extending festive greetings to his followers, he wrote that the love he had received throughout his musical career had always been special, but the response to the recent controversy had been particularly moving.

"The way you stood by me, the way you spoke for me, the faith you showed in me and the love you gave me… I don't think I can ever fully express what it has meant to me," the singer wrote.

He said he had read messages from supporters and felt encouraged by their prayers and expressions of solidarity.

In his statement, Mehndi acknowledged the role played by his family during the controversy, describing them as his greatest source of strength.

He particularly thanked his brother and fellow singer Mika Singh, who had publicly defended him after videos of the Uttarakhand incident circulated on social media.

Mehndi credited Mika with standing firmly beside him and speaking out in his support when questions were raised about his conduct and performance.

He also expressed gratitude to his wife Taran and their children for supporting him through the controversy.

The singer extended his appreciation to members of the music and entertainment fraternity who had reached out to him.

He said the affection he received from colleagues, admirers and people across the country had strengthened his belief in the relationships he had built during his career.

Mehndi also reflected on how fortunate he felt to experience such appreciation during his lifetime.

He acknowledged that he had not been able to respond individually to every message but assured supporters that their kindness had not gone unnoticed.

The controversy began during Mehndi's performance at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in Narendra Nagar in Uttarakhand's Tehri Garhwal district in October.

Uttarakhand Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted the singer on stage and questioned the quality of his performance.

Videos of the confrontation subsequently circulated widely on social media, drawing reactions from the entertainment industry and the public.

In the footage, Uniyal was seen questioning Mehndi's ability to perform and expressing dissatisfaction with the programme.

The minister later alleged that Mehndi had been lip-syncing instead of singing live and appeared unable to perform properly.

Uniyal also claimed that the singer had been offered Rs 35 lakh for the performance and argued that the organisers and audience were entitled to expect a professional show.

Allegations that Mehndi was under the influence of alcohol also surfaced following the incident. However, those claims have not been independently substantiated.

Following the incident, several prominent personalities from the entertainment industry came forward in support of Mehndi, criticising the manner in which he was confronted publicly.

Mika Singh defended his brother and said he had been dealing with health problems for the past two years and was still recovering.

He also rejected the allegation that Mehndi had consumed alcohol before the performance.

Actor Anupam Kher expressed disappointment over the public confrontation and said the singer deserved respect for his contribution to Indian music.

Other artists, including Badshah, Shaan and Harshdeep Kaur, also extended support to Mehndi.

However, singer Sona Mohapatra offered a different perspective, arguing that while established performers deserved dignity and compassion, audiences and organisers were also entitled to expect accountability.

The controversy subsequently developed into a wider discussion about professional commitments, the health of performing artists and the appropriate manner of raising concerns about a public performance.

Uniyal subsequently refused to apologise for the confrontation, maintaining that he had acted in response to what he considered an unsatisfactory performance.

Meanwhile, Mehndi's son Gurdeep described the incident as unfortunate and acknowledged that the controversy had placed the family under stress.

Gurdeep also thanked those who had supported his father during the episode.
