‘Couldn’t step out for four days’: Radhika Apte recalls fear after intimate clip was leaked

Actor Radhika Apte has opened up about the fear and loss of privacy she experienced after an intimate scene featuring her was leaked, recalling that she could not step out of her home for four days as the footage rapidly circulated beyond the confines of the film industry.

Apte, who is currently seen in Lust Stories 3, spoke about the episode while discussing the complexities actors face when performing intimate scenes and how footage released without their consent can quickly intrude into their personal lives.

‘It can come home very quickly’

Apte said there was a fundamental difference between agreeing to perform an intimate scene as part of a professional project and losing control over that material when it is leaked.

“We were talking about being able to do intimate scenes, but once something I had done was leaked, I literally couldn’t step out of the house for four days,” she said in an interview with India Today.

For Apte, the most unsettling part was discovering how quickly the clip had reached people she encountered in her everyday life.

She recalled her stylist telling her that the stylist’s driver had repeatedly watched the footage and questioned why she was going to Apte’s home. “My watchman had seen it as well,” Apte said, adding that the situation became increasingly difficult to deal with.

The actor said the experience made her realise that online circulation of such material could have real-world consequences. “The problem is that it can come home very quickly. Your doorbell can ring, and somebody can be outside your house because they felt offended,” she said.

Feared for safety while living alone

Apte said she was particularly frightened because she was living alone at the time. As her concerns over personal safety grew, she decided to speak directly to members of her team.

She called her driver and spot dada and told them about the leaked footage, even offering to show it to them if they had not already seen it. She then asked whether they would continue working with her and, crucially, whether they would stand by her if she faced a threatening situation.

Both assured her that they would “look after” her, she recalled.

Apte said the episode illustrated how the consequences of an intimate scene being leaked could extend well beyond embarrassment or online commentary. For the person whose footage is circulated, she said, it could create a genuine fear about physical safety and interactions with people in everyday life.

Questions over control and consent

The actor’s account came during a wider conversation about sexuality, consent and the treatment of women on screen. Apte has previously spoken about performing intimate scenes when she believes they serve a story, while objecting to nudity or sexual content being included merely for effect.

In recent interviews, she has also recalled filmmakers making requests for intimate or revealing scenes without what she considered adequate narrative justification. In one instance, she said she was asked whether she would perform an action sequence in her innerwear, a suggestion she questioned. Her latest remarks draw a distinction between an actor’s consent to perform a scene and consent over how that footage is subsequently handled. Once material is leaked outside its intended context, Apte said, the performer loses control over who sees it and how it is consumed.

Apte is currently part of Netflix’s Lust Stories 3, the latest instalment in the anthology series exploring relationships, intimacy and sexuality. Her recent conversations around the project have also touched on women’s desires, the male gaze in cinema and changing portrayals of consent in Hindi films.

For Apte, however, the memory of the leaked footage remains tied to something more immediate — the moment an incident originating on a film set reached her doorstep and made her afraid to leave her own home.
