Karan Johar shared memories of watching Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna with audiences and facing strong reactions to its portrayal of marriage and infidelity

Two decades after 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' hit theatres, filmmaker Karan Johar has revisited the strong reactions the film received from audiences. On the film’s 20th anniversary, Johar recalled watching it with moviegoers during a paid preview and described some encounters that left him shaken.

Sharing his memories on Instagram, Johar wrote, “On the eve of the 20th anniversary of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna... penning down some unique encounters and realisations I had, thanks to this film!”

About the film

Released in August 2006, 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' follows Dev and Maya, played by Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, two people unhappy in their respective marriages who develop feelings for each other.

The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Kirron Kher in key roles. Its themes of marriage, desire, guilt and emotional conflict sparked debate when it first reached theatres.
