Actor Imran Khan asked to leave India by October 28 after joining CJP protest in Mumbai

Mumbai Police reportedly directs actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28

Actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, has reportedly been directed by the Mumbai Police to leave India by October 28, days after he participated in a protest in support of the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

The reported notice follows Khan’s detention during a demonstration in Mumbai on October 10. The protest was held in solidarity with CJP’s agitation in Delhi, which has called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Detention at August Kranti Maidan

Khan was among hundreds of people detained by the Mumbai Police during the demonstration near August Kranti Maidan and Nana Chowk. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayn Marie Khan were also detained. All three were released later that evening.

Following his detention, Khan shared a photograph from inside a police van with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

Speaking to reporters, the actor said he had attended in his individual capacity and was not representing any organisation. He said he wanted to understand why people’s freedom of movement was being restricted and why their voices were being suppressed.

Complaint over his participation in the protest

The development comes amid demands by BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya for action against Khan over his participation in the demonstration. Somaiya questioned whether the actor, who is reported to be a foreign national and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, was permitted to take part in a political protest.

Somaiya sought Khan’s detention and deportation, alleging that his participation could have violated OCI regulations and visa conditions. He also approached the Mumbai Police and immigration authorities over the matter.

The Gamdevi police subsequently forwarded Somaiya’s complaint to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for examination of the allegations relating to Khan’s OCI status.

The reported direction to leave India marks a further development in the matter. The full terms of the notice and Khan’s response to it were not immediately available.
