UPI transactions scale new peak in July; value approaches Rs 30 lakh crore
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) registered its strongest monthly performance yet in July, with both transaction volumes and value climbing to fresh record levels, underscoring the continued expansion of the country's digital payments ecosystem. The latest figures indicate that the total value of UPI transactions came close to the Rs 30 lakh crore mark during the month, recovering from the marginal slowdown recorded in June and reaffirming the platform's dominance in retail digital payments.
The rebound follows a brief moderation in June, when UPI processed 22.72 billion transactions worth Rs 28.92 lakh crore, after touching an all-time high of Rs 29.90 lakh crore in May. Industry observers attribute July's growth to a combination of higher consumer spending, rising merchant acceptance, increased digital adoption in smaller cities, and a greater number of working days compared with June. UPI continues to account for the overwhelming majority of India's real-time retail digital payments, with usage extending from small-value everyday purchases to large commercial transactions.
The sustained momentum highlights the growing reliance on UPI across households and businesses. Over the past few years, the platform has expanded rapidly through wider QR code deployment, integration with banking services, and increasing acceptance among merchants of all sizes. The rising transaction count also reflects the growing use of UPI for routine payments such as groceries, transport, utility bills, online shopping and person-to-person transfers, while the average transaction value has moderated as more low-ticket payments shift from cash to digital modes.
The record July performance further strengthens UPI's position as the backbone of India's digital payments infrastructure. Developed and operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform has witnessed consistent year-on-year growth and is increasingly being integrated into cross-border payment arrangements. Analysts expect transaction volumes to remain on an upward trajectory in the coming months, supported by festive season spending, expanding merchant networks and continued innovation in digital payment services.
