September 1 changes: Milk prices, travel rules and key deadlines you need to know

From Mumbai milk prices to international travel and tax filing, several important dates are approaching, while the RBI’s revised fixed deposit rules will actually take effect from October 1

September will bring a mix of changes and deadlines affecting taxpayers, LPG consumers, milk buyers, international travellers and bank customers. However, some changes commonly described as September 1 rules actually have different effective dates.

Here is a look at the key dates and what they mean:

International travellers to skip boarding pass stamp

From September 1, passengers travelling internationally from India will no longer need to get their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters.

Travellers can use an electronic boarding pass on their phones or carry a printed copy, simplifying the departure process.

Mumbai tabela milk prices rise

Fresh buffalo milk supplied by Mumbai's tabela, or dairy farms, will cost more from September 1.

The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has raised the wholesale rate by Rs 9 per litre, from Rs 93 to Rs 102. The revised rate will apply until February 28, 2027.

Producers have cited higher costs of dairy animals, cattle feed and fodder. Some feed items have reportedly become up to 25 per cent more expensive.

Since this is a wholesale price increase, consumers may not necessarily see an identical Rs 9 rise in retail prices. The final amount will depend on suppliers and retailers.

Two important deadlines fall on August 31

For some taxpayers, August 31 is the deadline to file income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27. The date applies to taxpayers with business or professional income whose accounts do not require an audit and who are eligible to file ITR-3 or ITR-4.

LPG consumers required to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC also need to finish the process by August 31. Those who have not completed it should check with their LPG provider about the required procedure.

New FD rules begin in October

The Reserve Bank of India's revised framework for bank deposits does not take effect on September 1. The new rules will come into force from October 1, 2026.

The changes include provisions concerning bulk deposits of Rs 3 crore and above, with banks required to publish applicable interest rates for such deposits on their websites by 10.10 am on working days.

LPG and fuel prices need official confirmation

Domestic LPG, fuel and aviation turbine fuel prices may be reviewed at the start of a month. However, any September 1 revision should be treated as confirmed only after the oil marketing companies announce the new rates.

The main dates to remember are therefore August 31 for ITR and LPG e-KYC deadlines, September 1 for the boarding pass and Mumbai tabela milk changes, and October 1 for the revised FD framework.
