SBI bank strike: Cheques, branches, ATMs, UPI—what will be affected?

A three-day nationwide bank strike is scheduled from September 28 to 30. Here’s what SBI customers need to know about ATMs, UPI, YONO and branch services

The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued an advisory for customers ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, 2026.

The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). SBI has asked customers to finish important branch-related work before the strike and use digital banking channels for routine transactions during the affected period.

With September 26 and 27 falling on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, customers could face limited access to regular branch services for five consecutive days.

When will the bank strike take place?

The nationwide strike is scheduled for September 28, 29 and 30. Branch operations may vary depending on the level of employee participation at individual locations.

The UFBU had also called a nationwide strike on September 11. The union forum has announced further protest action, including a continuous strike beginning October 26.

SBI has advised customers who need services requiring branch visits or staff assistance to complete those transactions beforehand.

Services that will remain available

SBI said it is taking steps to keep essential banking services operational during the strike.

Customers will continue to have access to ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) for cash withdrawals and other eligible services. Customer Service Points (CSPs) will also provide select banking facilities.

Digital banking services are expected to remain operational. Customers can use internet banking, mobile banking and YONO for routine banking activities without visiting a branch.

UPI services will also continue to allow customers to make payments and transfer funds digitally.

Services that may face disruption

Banking activities that require physical documentation or assistance from branch employees could be affected during the strike.

Cheque-related processes may face delays, while other services that depend on branch staff could also be disrupted depending on employee participation.

SBI has therefore advised customers to plan ahead and complete essential branch-dependent transactions before September 28.

For routine payments, fund transfers and other day-to-day banking needs, customers can rely on digital channels during the strike period.
