Nirmala Sitharaman meets JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon in Mumbai, discusses India’s growth story
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday met JPMorgan Chase chairman and chief executive officer Jamie Dimon in Mumbai, with the two discussing India’s economic growth and developments in the financial sector. The meeting came during Dimon’s visit to India and against the backdrop of the country’s efforts to attract greater international investment and strengthen its position in global financial markets. The Finance Ministry said Sitharaman and Dimon exchanged views on India’s economic outlook and the evolving global financial landscape.
India growth in focus
The discussions covered India’s growth trajectory and opportunities emerging from the country’s expanding economy. The meeting also touched upon developments in banking and financial services and the role of global financial institutions in supporting investment.
India has sought to draw more long-term overseas capital into infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and other sectors while simultaneously deepening its domestic capital markets.
The government has also been highlighting the country’s digital public infrastructure, expanding financial inclusion and reforms aimed at improving the investment environment.
Dimon, who has headed JPMorgan Chase since 2006, is among the most prominent figures in global banking. The US financial services group has maintained a presence in India for several decades and has operations spanning investment banking, commercial banking, payments and technology.
JPMorgan expands India presence
India has emerged as an important base for JPMorgan’s global operations, with the bank employing tens of thousands of people across the country. The financial services major has operations in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, among other locations, while India also serves as a significant technology and operations hub for the group.
Dimon has repeatedly highlighted India’s economic potential and the opportunities presented by its large domestic market, infrastructure expansion and technological development.
His latest visit comes at a time when international investors are closely watching India's economic growth, corporate investment and financial-sector reforms amid uncertainty in the global economy.
Global investors courted
Sitharaman’s meeting with Dimon is part of the government’s continuing engagement with global business and financial leaders as New Delhi seeks investment across major sectors. India has been positioning itself as a manufacturing and investment destination as companies diversify supply chains and expand their presence across Asia.
The government has also focused on increasing private investment to complement public spending on infrastructure and support sustained economic expansion. The interaction with Dimon provides another opportunity for New Delhi to engage a major global financial institution on investment prospects and the outlook for the Indian economy.
