State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) recorded its highest-ever monthly coal supply of 70.3 million tonnes (MT) in October 2026, registering a 19 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year, the Ministry of Coal said on Sunday.

Coal supplies to the power sector reached 57.1 MT in October, the highest monthly volume recorded by the company. This represented a 19 per cent increase from 48 MT supplied during October 2025 and exceeded the previous record of 56.5 MT achieved in May 2024.
The ministry said the improved supply reflected the company's efforts to ensure adequate fuel availability for thermal power plants amid growing electricity requirements.
Coal production also increased by approximately 19 per cent year-on-year to 67.2 MT, compared with 56.4 MT in October 2025. This was the company's highest production for any October, surpassing the previous record of 62.47 MT recorded in October 2024.

Coal India also registered a record in railway transportation, with average daily rake loading for the power sector reaching 310 rakes during October. The previous highest monthly average was 302.8 rakes per day, recorded in March 2025.
The company said the improvement in railway evacuation had helped accelerate coal deliveries to power plants and strengthen the domestic fuel supply chain.
Its subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited also crossed the 20 MT monthly coal supply mark for the first time, contributing significantly to the overall record.
