Centre approves Rs 1,600 crore for 41 pharma and MedTech research projects

The government had cleared the first batch of projects under the PRIP scheme to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical research and innovation

The Centre has approved 41 projects involving financial support of approximately Rs 1,600 crore in the first round of the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech (PRIP) scheme. The approvals, announced on Wednesday, mark a step towards strengthening India's domestic research capabilities in pharmaceuticals and medical technology.

The projects form part of the government's broader effort to transform the pharmaceutical sector from a manufacturing-driven industry into an innovation-led ecosystem. The PRIP scheme, with a total outlay of Rs 5,000 crore, aims to encourage research, promote industry-academia collaboration and support the development of advanced medicines and medical devices.

Focus on pharmaceutical research and innovation

The scheme provides financial assistance for eligible research and innovation projects undertaken by pharmaceutical companies, medical technology firms, startups and other industry participants. It seeks to promote research in priority areas, including drug discovery, development and advanced medical devices, while encouraging greater private-sector participation.

The initiative is intended to address gaps in domestic research capabilities and strengthen India's position in pharmaceutical innovation. Financial support under the programme is designed to help eligible projects progress through research and development, including activities associated with product development and validation.

Seven centres of excellence established

An important component of the PRIP scheme involves strengthening research infrastructure at the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs). The government has established seven centres of excellence with budgetary support of Rs 700 crore to promote specialised research and facilitate collaboration between academic institutions and industry.

These centres are intended to provide research infrastructure and technical expertise for developing innovative pharmaceutical products and medical technologies. The scheme also provides financial support for industry-led research projects, including those undertaken in collaboration with academic institutions.

Push for domestic innovation

The latest approvals form part of India's efforts to reduce dependence on imported medical technologies and encourage the development of indigenous pharmaceutical products. The government aims to strengthen research capabilities while creating opportunities for domestic companies and startups to participate in advanced medical innovation.

The PRIP initiative complements existing programmes supporting pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. Its emphasis on research and development is intended to help India expand beyond conventional manufacturing and strengthen its participation in the global pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem.
