Social media platform X has suspended the account of American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), one of the organisations behind an upcoming New York event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.
The suspension comes days before the “Universal Oneness Celebration”, scheduled for August 29 at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden. AHEAD has approached X seeking restoration of its account, @Aheadforum1. No official reason for the suspension has been made public so far. AHEAD has said it believes the action may have been taken in error and maintained that its online communications have focused on peace, harmony and dialogue among different communities.
Account appeal
AHEAD, a registered non-profit organisation in the United States, is among more than 200 Hindu-American organisations supporting the New York gathering. The organisers have described the programme as a multicultural and interfaith event built around themes of unity, mutual respect and civic engagement.
The organisation has maintained that material posted through its X account was consistent with the platform’s policies and highlighted participation by community and faith leaders. The timing of the suspension has drawn attention because Bhagwat’s New York appearance has become the focus of a wider political controversy. However, there is no confirmed evidence linking X’s action against AHEAD’s account to the opposition surrounding the event.
Event faces opposition
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly expressed opposition to the gathering while acknowledging that the city may not have the authority to cancel a private event.
Amid the controversy, the Hindu American Foundation has also issued a security advisory for those planning to attend the August 29 programme. It urged participants to remain vigilant and civil and called on the New York administration to ensure the safety and civil rights of attendees.
The controversy has widened further after the US Commission on International Religious Freedom urged the American administration to consider action against Bhagwat, including revocation of his visa. The commission has raised allegations concerning religious freedom in India and the RSS.
India has rejected the commission’s assertions. The Ministry of External Affairs has described the USCIRF as a biased organisation lacking credibility and said its assessments fail to reflect India’s pluralistic society.
Bhagwat’s New York programme is part of an overseas outreach visit that also includes Canada and the United Kingdom. The August 29 gathering is expected to bring together members of the Indian diaspora as well as representatives of different communities and faith groups.
As of Thursday, X had not publicly explained why AHEAD’s account was suspended or indicated when a decision on the organisation’s appeal for reinstatement could be expected.
