US President Donald Trump turned a formal address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York into a brief personal moment when he paused to praise First Lady Melania Trump.
While speaking about her work, Trump looked around the packed UN hall and asked, "Where is our First Lady? She's around here someplace."
The camera then showed Melania seated with members of the US delegation. She smiled and waved as those around her gestured towards Trump.
Trump thanked her for her efforts and said she had “worked so hard”, before highlighting her involvement in international initiatives and diplomacy.
Trump highlights Melania’s UN role
Trump pointed to Melania’s appearance earlier this year at the UN Security Council, where she presided over a meeting. He also spoke about her work through the Fostering the Future Together initiative, which focuses on improving children's access to education and technology while addressing online safety.
The initiative was launched during the 2025 UN General Assembly and has since expanded to include representatives from nearly 60 countries.
Trump said, "Thank you very much, First Lady. Great job. This year, she also became the only First Lady in history to preside over a meeting of the U.N. Security Council, and she did it very well. And today, she's hosting a gathering of Fostering the Future Together, which has nearly 60 members to help improve the lives of young people all over the world. So, Melania, thank you very much. Great job. Great job you're doing."
Initiative expands at UN General Assembly
The White House said on September 22 that Melania had brought members of the coalition together again during this year’s UN General Assembly.
The initiative now has representatives from nearly 60 countries. The White House has also announced partnerships involving technology companies including Google, Amazon, Adobe, Intel, Starlink and Zoom.
Melania’s work has also included efforts concerning children separated from their families amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to the White House, her office has been involved in communication with both governments over their return.
White House highlights family reunifications
The White House has said Melania’s efforts helped facilitate multiple family reunifications, with 34 children reunited with their families as of August.
It has also referred to several rounds of reunifications, including a fifth group in July and additional cases in August.
At the UN, however, it was her husband’s unscripted moment of looking across the hall and asking, "Where is our First Lady?" that briefly shifted attention from the formal proceedings to Melania in the audience.
