US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced plans to establish an “AI Force” to oversee the regulation of artificial intelligence and said he would soon appoint an AI “czar” to lead the effort.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, saying the new initiative would monitor the rapidly expanding AI industry while avoiding measures that could hinder its growth.
Trump says AI growth should not be hindered
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump said in the post, while adding that his administration would act against harmful uses of AI through existing criminal and civil justice systems.
Trump did not immediately provide details on the composition, powers or timeline of the proposed AI Force. He also did not name the person who would serve as the AI czar, saying the appointment would be announced in the near future.
The announcement comes as concerns over the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems have intensified among technology leaders and researchers.
Tech leaders call for slower AI development
The move follows recent calls from prominent figures in the AI industry for greater safeguards and a slower pace of development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for the industry to devote greater attention to safety measures as AI systems become more capable. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other technology leaders have also backed discussions on AI safety, although the industry remains divided over how quickly development should proceed.
Recent concerns have focused on the possibility of increasingly autonomous AI systems being used maliciously or behaving in ways that developers cannot adequately control. The 2026 International AI Safety Report, prepared with input from more than 100 independent experts, said current systems showed early signs of capabilities relevant to loss-of-control risks, while stressing that their likelihood, nature and timing remained highly uncertain.
Trump administration faces debate over AI regulation
Trump's announcement also comes amid a broader debate in Washington over whether the federal government should impose stronger rules on the AI industry.
The administration has faced calls from technology leaders for greater government oversight, while Trump has previously opposed efforts that he believes could slow America's AI development. The debate has also been shaped by concerns about maintaining the United States' technological lead over China.
Trump's proposed AI Force appears intended to provide greater oversight without imposing a broad slowdown on the industry. However, details about its legal authority, membership and relationship with existing federal agencies have yet to be announced.
The planned appointment of an AI czar would give the administration a central official responsible for coordinating its approach to the rapidly evolving technology.
