Several US military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes on American positions in Jordan, although no US personnel were killed or injured, according to a report, as Tehran continues attacks on American military assets across West Asia amid the widening conflict.
The aircraft were damaged at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, an important installation used by US forces in Jordan, CNN reported, citing US officials. The extent of the damage and the types of aircraft affected were not immediately disclosed. The attack was among a series of Iranian missile and drone strikes directed at American military facilities in the region.
US officials said there were no American casualties in the Jordan attack. The development is nevertheless significant because it demonstrates Iran’s ability to inflict material damage on US military assets despite extensive American air and missile defence systems deployed across the region.
Iran targets US bases across region
Tehran has launched repeated attacks against US military facilities since the United States joined Israel in military operations against Iran earlier this year. American forces stationed across West Asia have consequently been placed on heightened alert, with air defence systems being used to intercept incoming missiles and drones.
Jordan hosts American military personnel and provides strategically important facilities for US operations in the region. Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, located near Azraq, has long supported US and allied operations and has undergone infrastructure upgrades to accommodate aircraft and personnel.
Iranian attacks have not been confined to Jordan. US installations and military positions elsewhere in the region have also faced missile and drone threats, forcing Washington to reposition aircraft, strengthen air defences and take additional measures to protect personnel.
The Pentagon has maintained that US forces retain the capability to defend themselves and respond to attacks. The latest damage, however, underscores the vulnerability of fixed military installations during a sustained exchange involving large numbers of missiles and drones.
No American casualties reported
Despite the damage to aircraft, US officials said all American personnel at the Jordanian installation were safe. Assessments were underway to establish the full extent of damage and determine how quickly the affected aircraft could be repaired or returned to service.
The absence of casualties could also prove important in determining Washington’s response. Previous attacks that killed American military personnel have triggered direct US retaliation against Iran-backed forces, while strikes causing limited material damage have sometimes produced more calibrated responses.
Iran has maintained that American military facilities supporting operations against it are legitimate targets and has warned countries hosting US forces about allowing their territory to be used for attacks on Iran.
Regional conflict continues to widen
The reported strike comes as the confrontation increasingly threatens military installations, shipping routes and energy infrastructure across West Asia. Iran’s retaliation has extended beyond direct exchanges with Israel as American bases and assets across the region face heightened threats.
The conflict has already disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while renewed fighting involving the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen has raised concerns over the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea shipping.
With US military forces distributed across Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq and other locations, continued Iranian attacks risk opening multiple fronts simultaneously. The damage reported in Jordan, even without casualties, highlights the growing military and economic costs of a conflict that is increasingly extending beyond the territories of its principal combatants.
