'Why ask at 10 pm?': Mahua moves privilege notice against Bengal officials over late-night eviction

TMC MP Mahua Moitra has moved a Lok Sabha privilege notice against three Nadia officials after being asked to vacate a circuit house late at night

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has moved a privilege notice in the Lok Sabha against three senior officials of Nadia district administration, alleging a breach of protocol after she was asked to vacate the Nadia Circuit House late at night.

Moitra filed the notice under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha on August 16. She named Nadia District Magistrate Srikant Palli, Additional District Magistrate Nirpendra Singh and Nazareth Deputy Collector Anamika Bera.

The TMC MP has alleged that the incident amounted to contemptuous conduct and sought action against the officials. She has also asked Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to ensure that she can discharge her parliamentary responsibilities without intimidation or harassment.

Moitra questions late-night eviction

Moitra said she had informed the Speaker about her visit to her constituency on August 13, after the Monsoon Session of Parliament ended, before travelling back to West Bengal.

She reached the Nadia Circuit House at around 6.15 pm on August 14 and was allotted her usual room, which she said had been prepared for her. According to Moitra, tea was served at 7 pm, followed by dinner at 9.20 pm.

"Tea was served in my room at 7 pm and dinner was served at 9.20 pm in the room," she said.

However, at around 9.47 pm, Moitra said she received a call from the additional district magistrate asking her to vacate the room. When she sought an explanation, she was allegedly told that the instruction had come from the district magistrate.

WhatsApp order arrives later

Moitra said that at 10.52 pm, she received a WhatsApp message containing an order stating that the circuit house would remain unavailable from the evening of August 14 for annual maintenance and cleaning.

The order was dated August 12 and stated that bookings confirmed before August 13 would be exempt from the general suspension.

Moitra has questioned why she was asked to leave nearly two days after the order was issued and after she had already checked into the accommodation.

She alleged that the administration did not inform her about the order either when the room was booked or when she arrived at the circuit house.
