TMC rejects reports on alleged KMC notice linked to Abhishek Banerjee as 'fabricated'

The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday dismissed as “false, fabricated and devoid of credibility” media reports and social media posts concerning a purported Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) notice allegedly linked to properties associated with the party’s national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee.

In an official statement issued by the party, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) alleged that the notice had been “leaked unofficially” by the BJP and accused sections of the media of amplifying unverified claims. The controversy pertains to reports highlighting multiple properties allegedly linked to Banerjee while also attempting to connect other party leaders to the matter.

“The notice and the media coverage over the last few days are completely false, fabricated and devoid of any credibility,” the party said.

AITC further stated that journalists could independently verify the claims by visiting the addresses mentioned in the alleged notice or contacting the phone numbers cited in it, instead of “merely propagating narratives being fed by the BJP”. The party also urged media organisations to exercise “sensitivity and responsibility” while reporting on the issue and warned that “false reporting or misleading posts” would be dealt with “appropriately in accordance with the provisions of law before the competent court”.

Senior TMC leader Sushmita Dev also reacted strongly to the controversy in a post on X, formerly Twitter, accusing certain journalists of functioning as “mouthpieces” of a political party. “Fake news travels fast owed to journalists that act as a mouth piece of a party. No fact check, no investigation just regurgitate what has been fed,” she wrote.

The BJP has not yet issued an official response to the TMC’s allegations.
