A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, bringing very heavy rain to several districts in south Bengal over the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy showers in the coastal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur on Wednesday due to the formation of the system.
Rain forecast till August 15
Heavy rain is expected in these districts as well as Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia and Paschim Bardhaman until August 15, according to the IMD forecast.
The weather office has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts until August 15. Strong winds with speeds of up to 55 kmph are likely over the region during this period.
North Bengal to see heavy rain
North Bengal, which received some relief from heavy downpours last week, is likely to see another spell of heavy rain from August 14 to August 17, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, Kolkata is expected to remain cloudy on Tuesday, with light to moderate rain possible.
Heavy rain inundates parts of Kolkata
Heavy rain in northern parts of Kolkata on Monday night led to waterlogging on several roads and slowed traffic in some areas on Tuesday morning.
Dum Dum recorded 101 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours till 8.30am on Tuesday, while Alipore in south Kolkata received 62 mm during the same period, according to IMD data.
