'Same-side goal': Kunal Ghosh taunts BJP over its 'Loktantra Bachao' rallies in Bengal

Mamata Trinamool Congress spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh has taunted the BJP over its ongoing 'Loktantra Bachao' (Save Democracy) rallies in West Bengal, saying the party was scoring a "same-side goal" by raising the issue of democracy despite being in power.

Ghosh taunts BJP over democracy campaign

"We have given this call wherever there is no democracy, particularly in states where the BJP is in power. If the BJP is now carrying out such activities, isn't it like scoring a same-side goal?" Ghosh asked on Wednesday.

Ghosh also suggested that the campaign might be more relevant to the party's own internal affairs, given the differences within its ranks.

"Perhaps they need to save democracy within their own party because of the internal rift. They should first look at what is happening inside their organisation," he said.

BJP launches 'Loktantra Bachao' campaign

The BJP on November 2 launched its 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao' (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) campaign in West Bengal, with party national president Nitin Nabin leading a march from College Street to Dharmatala in Kolkata, accompanied by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior leaders.

The campaign is part of the BJP's nationwide counter-mobilisation against the opposition's protests over alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The INDIA bloc held a rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on November 1, demanding accountability over alleged vote irregularities and raising questions about the Election Commission's functioning.

BJP plans second phase across Bengal

The BJP has planned to take its campaign across five organisational zones in West Bengal.

In the second phase, beginning November 11, the party plans to organise marches at around 800 locations across the state, with a target of at least 10,000 participants, according to its state leadership officials.
