Kolkata: Father and son allegedly paraded naked over relationship dispute

Kolkata Police arrest three after father and son are allegedly paraded naked over a relationship row

A young man and his father were allegedly stripped, assaulted and paraded naked through a street in Kolkata’s Behala area after the man’s relationship with a young woman triggered a confrontation with her family. Three people, including the woman’s father and maternal uncle, have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said on Monday.

The incident allegedly took place on Sunday in the Basundhara Park area under Sarsuna police station limits. It sparked outrage in the locality, with a purported video of the incident circulating on social media.

Family allegedly assaulted young man

According to a senior police officer, members of the woman’s family allegedly caught the young man and the woman together before confining him inside a house. The young man was allegedly assaulted by the woman’s father and maternal uncle.

The man’s father was subsequently summoned to the spot. During the confrontation, the woman’s family allegedly threatened the father with a firearm and forced him and his son to walk naked in public. Police said the father was allegedly given a choice between killing his son and facing public humiliation.

A friend of the young man was also reportedly assaulted and subjected to similar humiliation, the officer said.

Three arrested, police investigate

Police registered a case following a complaint from the young man’s family. Three people, including the woman’s father, mother and maternal uncle, have been arrested, according to reports. Police are investigating the incident and are looking for other people allegedly involved.

The purported video of the incident triggered tension in the neighbourhood. Some residents allegedly attempted to vandalise the woman’s house, prompting police to intervene and bring the situation under control. The woman’s maternal uncle was reportedly caught by local residents and handed over to the police.

The firearm allegedly used to threaten the victims has not yet been recovered, according to reports. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses as part of the probe.

The allegations are under investigation, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
