A carpenter has filed a police complaint against actor-politician and former Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty, accusing him of assaulting him at his Behala residence following a dispute over payment for furniture work, police said on Tuesday.
The complainant, identified as Rajkapur Sharma, approached Behala Police Station on Monday and submitted a written complaint alleging that his mobile phone was taken away before he was beaten and forcibly pushed out of Chakraborty's house. Police said an inquiry has been initiated into the allegations.
Rs 80,000 dues alleged
According to Sharma's complaint, Chakraborty had hired him around two months ago to undertake furniture work at his flat. Sharma claimed he was initially paid an advance of Rs 30,000, with the remaining amount to be cleared after completion of the assignment.
The carpenter alleged that after completing the work, he approached Chakraborty seeking outstanding dues of around Rs 80,000. According to the complaint, the actor-politician refused to make any further payment.
Sharma claimed he was subsequently contacted by one of Chakraborty's security guards on Sunday and asked to visit the former MLA's residence the following day.
He alleged that after reaching the house on Monday, he was made to wait for a considerable period on the assurance that his dues would be cleared. When he continued to insist on receiving the payment, Sharma alleged that he was verbally abused and his mobile phone was taken away.
Carpenter alleges assault
The complainant further alleged that he was beaten inside the residence before being forcibly pushed out of the house. He subsequently approached Behala Police Station and sought action over the incident.
A senior police officer confirmed that the written complaint had been received and said the allegations were being examined. No conclusion has yet been reached on the claims made by Sharma.
Chakraborty could not immediately be reached for his response to the allegations.
Past controversy
Chakraborty, who lost the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, had previously faced controversy during his tenure as a TMC MLA following an altercation at a hotel in New Town.
He was accused at the time of behaving abusively with the hotel's owner and staff after a disagreement over parking during a film shoot. The episode triggered political and public criticism, following which Chakraborty apologised for his conduct.
The latest allegations have now put the actor-politician back under scrutiny, although police have stressed that the carpenter's claims are currently the subject of an inquiry.
