An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 struck Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand early Monday morning, sending tremors across several parts of the Yamuna valley and prompting residents to step outside their homes.
According to the District Emergency Operation Centre in Uttarkashi, the earthquake occurred at 1.21 am. The tremors were felt in Uttarkashi, Barkot, Purola, Mori, Chinyalisaur and Dunda, officials said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage following the tremor.
Epicentre near Rajgarhi area
The earthquake's epicentre was located near the Rajgarhi area of Barkot tehsil, at a depth of 10 km, according to the report issued by the District Emergency Operation Centre.
The relatively shallow depth meant that the tremors were felt across several areas of the district.
Officials began collecting information from different parts of the affected areas following the earthquake. Reports were sought from tehsildars, police station and outpost in-charges, revenue sub-inspectors and village heads to assess whether the tremor had caused any damage.
No casualties or major damage reported
Officials said there have been no reports of casualties so far. No major damage to buildings or other infrastructure has been reported either.
The earthquake caused residents in parts of the Yamuna valley to rush out of their buildings after they felt the shaking. Authorities continued to gather information from local officials and village representatives to establish the situation on the ground.
The early-morning tremor comes in a seismically active Himalayan region, where earthquakes of varying intensity are recorded from time to time. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation in Uttarkashi following Monday's earthquake.
