The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to induct three rebel Samajwadi Party (SP) legislators on October 14, marking another development in the political realignment ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Rakesh Pratap Singh, Abhay Singh and Vinod Chaturvedi are expected to formally join the BJP at a programme in Gauriganj, Amethi. According to party insiders, senior BJP leaders, including state president Pankaj Chaudhary and national general secretary Smriti Irani, are expected to attend the event.
A fourth prominent SP rebel, Manoj Kumar Pandey, has already joined the Yogi Adityanath government as a minister. However, his formal induction into the BJP has not been confirmed.
The proposed switch by the three legislators follows the February 2024 Rajya Sabha elections, when several SP MLAs cross-voted in favour of BJP candidates despite their party's official position. Their anticipated induction would formalise a political separation that has been developing since that episode.
The three SP rebels and their constituencies
The three legislators expected to join the BJP represent constituencies across Uttar Pradesh. Rakesh Pratap Singh represents Gauriganj in Amethi district, Abhay Singh is the MLA from Gosainganj in Ayodhya district, and Vinod Chaturvedi represents Kalpi in Jalaun district.
All three have been at odds with the SP leadership following their support for BJP candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections. Their proposed move would bring their political alignment formally in line with the party they supported during the cross-voting episode.
Rakesh Pratap Singh has also publicly criticised the SP leadership on several political and ideological issues, including its approach to dynastic politics, caste-based politics and Hindutva. He has described his proposed move to the BJP as overdue. His anticipated induction is particularly significant in Amethi, where local political alignments remain important to both the BJP and the opposition.
Manoj Kumar Pandey's move to the state cabinet
Manoj Kumar Pandey, the SP MLA from Unchahar in Rae Bareli district, is another prominent figure associated with the rebellion. He was among the legislators who cross-voted in the 2024 Rajya Sabha elections and was subsequently expelled by the SP.
Pandey has since joined the Yogi Adityanath cabinet. His entry into the state government, however, should be distinguished from formal membership of the BJP, which has not been confirmed. The October 14 programme is expected to involve Rakesh Pratap Singh, Abhay Singh and Vinod Chaturvedi as the three legislators scheduled to join the party.
What the defections could mean for the 2027 elections
The developments come as the BJP and SP prepare for the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The induction of sitting legislators could strengthen the BJP's political networks in their respective constituencies and give it access to established local political support.
For the SP, the proposed defections raise further questions about internal cohesion following the Rajya Sabha cross-voting episode and the subsequent fallout with rebel legislators. The shift is also reflected in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly's membership records, with Vinod Chaturvedi listed as an SP MLA, while Rakesh Pratap Singh and Abhay Singh appeared in the unattached category, according to reports.
However, the electoral impact of the moves remains uncertain. Voter responses in the three constituencies, candidate selection and the wider political contest will all influence whether the BJP can convert the defections into electoral gains. The proposed October 14 induction, if completed as scheduled, would represent the next formal step in a political realignment that began with the Rajya Sabha cross-voting in February 2024.
