'Will stop anti-Hindu show': Bajrang Dal threatens to disrupt Kunal Kamra's Hyderabad comedy show

The organisation objected to the comedian's performance, alleging that his material hurt Hindu religious sentiments

The Bajrang Dal has threatened to disrupt stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's scheduled performance in Hyderabad on Sunday, alleging that his comedy contains remarks offensive to Hindu religious beliefs.

The warning has added to the controversy surrounding Kamra's visit to the city, with the Telangana unit of the Shiv Sena having already announced its opposition to the event. Kamra's show, Standing Up by Kunal Kamra, was listed for October 11 at TGRTC Kalabhavan in Hyderabad. The ticketing platform BookMyShow advertised the Hindi-language performance as featuring new material from the comedian.

The objections come amid continuing criticism of Kamra by political and religious organisations over his satirical performances and remarks about political figures.

Shiv Sena issued warning

Earlier, Telangana Shiv Sena president Sinkaru Shivaji had warned that party workers would prevent Kamra from performing in Hyderabad, accusing the comedian of insulting Sanatana Dharma, Hindu deities and religious beliefs.

Shivaji also referred to Kamra's earlier remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which had triggered a political controversy. The Shiv Sena leader said his organisation would oppose any venue hosting Kamra's performance and warned organisers against proceeding with the event. The allegations against Kamra concern the content of his comedy and political commentary. They remain claims made by the organisations opposing the show, rather than established findings of wrongdoing.

Show faces uncertainty

The threats have raised questions about whether the performance can proceed without disruption. However, there was no independently verified confirmation in the available reports that the event had been cancelled or that police had prohibited it.

The controversy has also brought attention to the question of how authorities balance the right to artistic expression with their responsibility to maintain public order when organisations threaten to disrupt performances. Kamra's response to the latest Bajrang Dal warning could not be independently confirmed.
