The Congress leadership has stepped up its scrutiny of Telangana minister Konda Surekha’s family after her daughter Konda Sushmitha’s remarks against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy triggered a fresh controversy within the state unit. AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan has sought a report on Sushmitha’s statements, signalling that the central leadership is taking the episode seriously amid concerns over growing public differences within the ruling party.
The development has increased pressure on the politically influential Konda family, with senior Congress leaders making it clear that individual leaders cannot publicly announce electoral candidatures or make statements that undermine the party’s organisational discipline.
Remarks trigger party unease
The controversy erupted after Sushmitha made critical remarks involving Revanth Reddy and also spoke about her political ambitions. Her statements drew attention within the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, where leaders have been attempting to contain factional differences and prevent disagreements from spilling into the public domain.
The TPCC disciplinary committee has also taken serious note of the episode. Natarajan’s decision to seek a report adds another layer to the party’s response and could determine whether any organisational action follows. Sushmitha is the daughter of Forest, Environment and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha and senior Congress leader Konda Murali. The family has considerable political influence in the Warangal region, making the controversy particularly significant for the party.
Congress warns against self-declared candidature
Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud has meanwhile stressed that no leader can unilaterally declare themselves or another person as a candidate for an election. He made it clear that the selection of candidates remains the prerogative of the Congress leadership and follows an established organisational process. His remarks were seen as a direct response to the debate generated by Sushmitha’s statements about future electoral contests.
The intervention indicates that the state leadership is seeking to draw a firm line on public declarations of candidature, particularly at a time when the Congress is attempting to maintain cohesion among competing groups within its Telangana organisation.
Fresh pressure on Konda family
The latest episode comes amid broader political scrutiny surrounding the Konda family. Surekha is a senior member of the Revanth Reddy Cabinet and represents Warangal East in the Telangana Assembly, while Konda Murali has remained an influential figure in the region’s politics. Public differences involving members of prominent political families have posed a recurring challenge for the Congress government, which has had to balance competing regional and individual interests since coming to power in Telangana.
For the party leadership, Sushmitha’s comments are therefore not being treated merely as an isolated statement. The concern is also about maintaining discipline and ensuring that disagreements involving senior leaders do not develop into a wider confrontation within the state unit.
High command keeps watch
Natarajan’s intervention assumes added significance because she is the AICC’s point person for Telangana and serves as an important link between the state organisation and the Congress central leadership.
By seeking a report, the party has left open the possibility of further action depending on the findings and the circumstances surrounding Sushmitha’s remarks.
The controversy has once again brought internal equations in the Telangana Congress into focus, with the leadership now facing the task of preventing the dispute from escalating while reinforcing the message that decisions on candidates and party strategy will be taken through official channels.
