Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has joined the INDIA bloc's protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan claimed on Friday. He said the party had recently joined the Opposition alliance's Tamil Nadu unit and was expected to participate in similar demonstrations at the national level in the coming days.
Speaking to ANI about TVK's participation in the October 15 demonstration in Chennai, Thirumavalavan said Vijay's party had aligned itself with the Opposition's campaign against the Election Commission and the Union government. "TVK has already joined the INDIA bloc. They are against the Election Commission and the Union government. They attended the INDIA bloc protest yesterday. Recently, they have joined the Tamil Nadu unit; later on, they will participate in the protest at the national level," he said.
The remarks suggest a widening of the Opposition's mobilisation over electoral roll revisions, with TVK's participation potentially adding a new dimension to the campaign in Tamil Nadu. However, Thirumavalavan's statement is a claim by an alliance leader, and a separate formal announcement from TVK confirming its organisational membership or the terms of any alliance arrangement was not established in the report.

TVK's participation in Thursday's protest followed a series of political engagements involving Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu. On October 3, representatives of Vijay's party attended a meeting of the state-level INDIA bloc alongside the Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), VCK, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Indian Union Muslim League. The meeting discussed coordinated opposition to the BJP-led Union government and the Election Commission's electoral roll revision exercise. The participating parties also adopted resolutions, including one welcoming TVK into the state-level Opposition grouping.
The political engagement gained further attention after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Vijay at his residence in Chennai on October 10. The meeting prompted discussion about closer cooperation between the Congress and TVK, particularly as Opposition parties intensified their campaign over the functioning of the Election Commission. Although TVK's participation in the Chennai demonstration indicated a willingness to coordinate on the electoral roll issue, the precise nature of its national-level relationship with the INDIA bloc remains to be clarified.

The October 15 protest was organised against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, with participating parties expressing concern that the exercise could result in eligible voters being removed from electoral registers. Opposition leaders have demanded stronger safeguards against wrongful deletions, greater transparency in the verification process and accountability from the Election Commission. The demonstration also included a demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whose handling of electoral matters has drawn criticism from several Opposition parties.
The controversy has developed into a broader political confrontation over the independence and accountability of the Election Commission. Opposition parties have questioned the procedures adopted during voter list revisions and argued that errors or arbitrary deletions could undermine citizens' voting rights. The Election Commission, meanwhile, maintains that electoral roll revision is necessary to ensure the accuracy of voter lists, including the removal of duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries.
On October 12, Opposition leaders led by Rahul Gandhi marched towards the Supreme Court in New Delhi, demanding scrutiny of the revision process and safeguards against the exclusion of genuine voters. The matter has also reached the judiciary. On October 15, the Supreme Court issued notices in proceedings concerning alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision exercise and sought responses from the authorities concerned.

Founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay in 2024, TVK has sought to establish an independent political identity in Tamil Nadu while challenging established political formations. Its participation in the INDIA bloc's protest marks a development in its engagement with other Opposition parties, although joining a common demonstration does not necessarily establish the full extent of an electoral or organisational alliance.
Thirumavalavan's statement that TVK would participate in future national-level protests suggests that discussions over wider cooperation may continue. However, no specific date or programme for such participation was announced, and the terms of any formal national-level arrangement remain unclear.
For the INDIA bloc, the involvement of Vijay's party could broaden participation in its campaign over electoral roll revisions in Tamil Nadu. For TVK, the immediate significance lies in its decision to join a coordinated protest on an issue that has become central to the Opposition's confrontation with the Election Commission.
The coming weeks will indicate whether the cooperation remains confined to protests against the SIR exercise or develops into a more structured political arrangement. For now, Thirumavalavan's remarks have brought renewed attention to TVK's relationship with the INDIA bloc and the possibility of its participation in future national demonstrations.
