The Election Commission of India (ECI) has formally recognised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), headed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, as a State Political Party and reserved the “Whistle” as its election symbol, marking another major institutional milestone for the party little more than two years after its launch.
The recognition follows TVK’s remarkable performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, its first major electoral contest, in which the party emerged as the single largest formation with 108 seats in the 234-member House and secured around 35 per cent of the votes. Although TVK fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority, Vijay subsequently formed the government with support from Congress and other parties that had earlier been aligned with the DMK-led coalition.
The Election Commission’s decision changes TVK’s formal electoral status from that of a registered unrecognised political party to a recognised State party. The recognition also means that the Whistle, which TVK used during the Assembly election, will no longer merely function as a common symbol allotted for a particular election but will become its reserved electoral identity in the state.
Whistle becomes permanent poll identity
The Whistle symbol has been closely associated with TVK since January, when the Election Commission allotted it to the party as a common symbol ahead of the Assembly polls. TVK had submitted a list of preferred symbols to the poll panel, with the Whistle reportedly at the top of its choices.
The January decision was particularly important for the then-new entrant because it allowed TVK candidates to contest under one recognisable symbol across constituencies instead of depending on different free symbols. Over the course of the campaign, the party extensively incorporated the Whistle into its election messaging and grassroots mobilisation, turning it into one of its most visible identifiers.
The 2026 election subsequently established the symbol among voters on a statewide scale. Official Election Commission results show TVK candidates contesting under the Whistle across Tamil Nadu, including in constituencies where the party recorded significant victories.
Its reservation following State-party recognition gives TVK greater certainty for future elections. Under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, recognised political parties receive reserved symbols, distinguishing them from registered unrecognised parties that generally have to seek common or free symbols subject to Election Commission rules.
Vijay thanks Tamil Nadu voters
Welcoming the development, Vijay credited the people of Tamil Nadu for TVK’s rapid rise from a newly launched political organisation to the state’s governing party. In a message following the Election Commission’s decision, he recalled that TVK was founded in 2024 and said the movement had entered electoral politics on the principles of secularism and social justice.
The Chief Minister pointed to the party’s 35 per cent vote share in the Assembly election and said voters had elevated TVK into the single largest party within just 27 months of its political journey. He also thanked party workers and office-bearers for building the organisation across Tamil Nadu.
Vijay described the formal recognition of both the party and its Whistle symbol as an extension of the mandate TVK received in the Assembly election. He reiterated his government’s commitment to corruption-free and transparent administration and its stated secular and social justice agenda.
From launch in 2024 to government in 2026
Vijay announced Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on February 2, 2024, formally making the transition from one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to full-time politics. The party chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election, instead concentrating on building its organisation for the 2026 Assembly polls.
That strategy culminated in an extraordinary electoral debut. TVK won 108 seats but remained 10 short of an outright majority. Vijay nevertheless became Chief Minister after securing the support required to form a government.
The political arrangement has since evolved into the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance”, formally announced in Chennai on Wednesday. Congress, MDMK, VCK and IUML leaders joined Vijay at the announcement, while the Left parties continue to support the government from outside.
TVK’s recognition now gives the ruling party a formal place among Tamil Nadu’s recognised State political parties and consolidates an electoral identity created during its first Assembly campaign. More importantly, it completes a rapid transformation that began with Vijay announcing a new political party in 2024, progressed through a statewide electoral breakthrough in 2026 and has now resulted in both control of the state government and formal recognition from the Election Commission.
