Punjabi influencer and makeup artist Mad Sandhu was shot dead by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in Amritsar on Saturday evening. Sandhu was found lying injured on the road after suffering a gunshot wound and was reportedly being taken to hospital when he died.
Police reached the spot after the shooting and have started an investigation into the incident. A video showing Sandhu lying on the road, covered in blood, has also surfaced on social media.
"Two unidentified men fired at him around 6 pm," said Sirivennela, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Sandhu was known for speaking on LGBTQ+ issues
Sandhu, whose full name was Madhusudan, had built a sizeable following through Instagram reels and viral videos. He was known for his makeup and fashion content, as well as posts about lifestyle, pop culture and social issues.
He also appeared as a guest on podcasts, where he spoke about subjects including makeup, the film industry and gender issues.
Sandhu had openly spoken about being gay and frequently faced homophobic comments and trolling online. Responding to criticism over his identity, he had said, "God had made me the way I am".
From fashion to social media popularity
Sandhu began his professional career in the fashion industry, working as a stylist and assistant costume designer on films in Punjab and Mumbai.
His social media presence later brought him wider recognition, with his content ranging from luxury looks and makeup tips to discussions around LGBTQ+ acceptance and social norms.
He also appeared in Punjabi films, including the 'Oye Bhole Oye' series, adding acting to his work in fashion, beauty and digital content.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identities of the two attackers. Further details about the motive and the suspects were not immediately available.
