Punjab Local Government minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday launched a 10-day cleanliness drive from Nangal to eliminate garbage-vulnerable points (GVPs).
Bains participated in the cleanliness campaign along with 'Safai Sewaks' and local councillors.
The campaign, which will end on September 7, aims at making Punjab a cleaner state through collective public participation, Bains said.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the drive would bolster Punjab's efforts to eliminate open garbage dumping sites.
"Punjab is the sacred land of our gurus and saints and a land of immense spiritual power. It is our collective responsibility to keep it clean and beautiful," the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said.
He said that over the next 10 days, MLAs, deputy commissioners, municipal corporation commissioners, additional deputy commissioners, executive officers, councillors, NGOs and other stakeholders will participate in the statewide campaign. Bains also sought the general public's support in making the campaign successful.
According to the government, people can use its M-Seva app to upload photographs of garbage vulnerable points in their areas.
A unique ID will be generated for every complaint, allowing the public to track its status.
The minister said that several GVPs have already been identified in the state's cities and towns.
Bains also said the hard work of 'Safai Sewaks' must be respected.
"Our Safai Sewaks work tirelessly to keep our cities and towns clean. We must support them and ensure that their efforts are not undone by irresponsible dumping of garbage," he said.
In Hoshiarpur, local MLA Bram Shanker Jimpa, mayor Praveen Saini, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Jyoti Bala Mattu, councillors and civic body officials took part in the campaign from Fatehgarh Chungi.
Addressing the gathering, Jimpa said the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is making efforts to make cities and villages clean, beautiful and pollution-free.
Jimpa said maintaining a clean city is not only the responsibility of the government or the municipal corporation but also of every resident.
