A man was hacked to death with a sharp-edged weapon allegedly by his nephew over a property dispute in Punjab's Hoshiarpur, police said on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Hajipur resident Sarabjit Singh, has been booked on murder charges and is absconding, police said.
Police said the incident occurred around 7.30 pm on Sunday when the victim, Mahinder Singh, was returning home on his scooter carrying a bag of flour.
As Mahinder reached near his residence in Hajipur, Sarabjit allegedly attacked him in the street and repeatedly struck him on the neck, head, arms and other parts of the body with a sickle-shaped sharp-edged weapon, they said.
Hearing the commotion, family members raised an alarm, following which neighbours gathered at the spot. Seeing the crowd, the suspect allegedly fled the scene carrying the weapon, the police said.
Mahinder was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Hajipur with severe bleeding, where doctors declared him dead, they said.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the accused were related and had a dispute over property.
A case has been registered at the Hajipur police station, and efforts are on to nab the accused, they added.
