Mumbai milk prices to rise by Rs 9/litre from September 1; check new rate

The price of tabela milk in Mumbai will increase to Rs 102 per litre from September 1, with the revised rate set to remain in effect until February 28, 2027

Mumbai households that buy fresh tabela milk will have to pay more from September 1, with local milk producers announcing a Rs 9 per litre increase.

The price of tabela milk will go up from the current Rs 93 per litre to Rs 102 per litre. The revised rate will remain in effect from September 1, 2026, until February 28, 2027, according to India Today.

The price revision comes just ahead of the festive season, when household expenses generally increase.

Higher feed and fodder costs drive hike

Milk producers have linked the increase to rising expenses involved in running dairy farms and maintaining cattle.

They said the cost of several cattle-feed items, including grains, has risen sharply, with some prices increasing by as much as 25%. The higher cost of fodder and oil cakes has added further pressure on dairy farmers.

According to producers, these rising input costs have made it difficult to continue selling tabela milk at Rs 93 per litre. They said the revised price was needed to cover the increased cost of maintaining dairy operations.

What Mumbai consumers will pay

With the new rates coming into force, consumers will pay Rs 102 for a litre of tabela milk, marking an increase of Rs 9 over the existing price.

The impact is likely to be felt most by households that regularly purchase fresh milk rather than packaged alternatives. For families buying milk every day, the higher per-litre price will add to their monthly grocery expenses.

The increase also comes at a time when household spending is expected to rise during the festive period, making the timing of the revision significant for consumers.

The new rate is scheduled to remain applicable for six months, until February 28, 2027.
