8 Pune students drown during coaching class trip to Diveagar beach

The students had travelled from Alandi to Raigad as part of a 48-member group from a private coaching institute

Eight students from a private coaching institute in Pune drowned after entering the sea at Diveagar beach in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Thursday afternoon, turning a group outing into a tragedy. All eight bodies were subsequently recovered, police and local authorities said.

The students were part of a group from Winners Academy in Alandi, Pune, which had travelled to Diveagar for an outing. The group comprised 48 people — 42 students and six teachers — according to preliminary information from officials.

Students enter sea

The group had arrived at Diveagar, a popular coastal destination in Shrivardhan taluka, and was visiting the beach when some of the students entered the sea.

Eight students were caught in the water and could not make their way back to the shore. Preliminary accounts indicated that the students were unable to gauge the depth and sea conditions before they were swept away.

The exact sequence of events leading to the drowning is being established by the authorities. Officials are also examining the circumstances under which the students entered the water during the organised outing.

Locals rush to rescue

As soon as people on the beach realised that the students were in distress, local residents and employees of Mahakali Water Sports rushed into the sea and began rescue efforts.

Police and local administrative personnel subsequently joined the operation. The students were pulled from the water as rescuers and others at the beach attempted to revive them.

The victims were taken for medical attention, but all eight were declared dead. Authorities later confirmed that the bodies of all the missing students had been recovered, bringing the search operation to an end.

The Dighi Marine police, under whose jurisdiction the beach falls, were involved in the response following the incident.

Group had come from Alandi

The students had travelled from Alandi in Pune district for the excursion organised by the private coaching institute. Reports said the academy provides coaching to Class XI and XII students.

The group consisted of 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers. What was intended to be a recreational outing turned into an emergency after the students entered the sea.

Police and district officials began gathering information from teachers, organisers and others present at the beach to establish how the incident unfolded and whether adequate precautions had been taken.

The administration is expected to examine the supervision arrangements for the students as well as the conditions at the beach at the time of the accident.

Safety measures under scrutiny

The deaths are also expected to bring renewed attention to safety arrangements at popular beaches visited by large groups of students and tourists.

Diveagar is a well-known tourist destination on Maharashtra's Konkan coast and attracts visitors from Pune, Mumbai and other parts of the state. Sea conditions, however, can change quickly, and visitors unfamiliar with coastal waters may find it difficult to assess currents and depth.

The circumstances surrounding Thursday's tragedy, including whether the students had been warned against entering particular stretches of the water and what supervision was available at the time, will form part of the authorities' examination of the incident.

Officials had not immediately announced any finding assigning responsibility for the deaths.

All eight bodies recovered

Initial reports from the site emerged while the search operation was still underway, with rescuers looking for students who remained unaccounted for. Authorities subsequently confirmed that all eight bodies had been recovered.

The incident sent shockwaves through Alandi as information about the deaths reached the students' families. Parents and relatives were informed, while officials began procedures relating to identification and other formalities.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks associated with group excursions to beaches and the need for close supervision when school or coaching institute students enter the sea.

Further investigation will focus on the precise circumstances of the drowning, the safety arrangements in place during the outing and whether preventive measures could have averted the deaths.
