National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah announced on Wednesday that the newly formed NC-Congress government will pass a resolution demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood in its first cabinet meeting.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah expressed optimism that this resolution would be taken to the Prime Minister following the government's formation. He emphasized that unlike Delhi, which was never a state, Jammu and Kashmir has a history of statehood prior to 2019, and promises have been made by the Prime Minister and other senior ministers regarding its restoration.
Abdullah noted that the processes of delimitation and elections have already taken place, leaving only the restoration of statehood pending. He stressed that the new government must maintain a cordial relationship with the Centre, stating, "Nothing can be achieved by having a confrontation with New Delhi." He highlighted the necessity for the government to focus on employment, development, and addressing various issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir rather than engaging in political disputes.
The NC leader revealed plans for a legislative party meeting to commence the process of government formation and indicated that the new government should be in place within a few days. Regarding potential collaboration with the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Abdullah mentioned that there have been no discussions yet, but he remains open to communication if a channel opens in the future.
Abdullah acknowledged the mandate from the people and the responsibility it entails, emphasizing the need to give a sense of ownership to all regions within Jammu and Kashmir. He also advised against the nomination of five MLAs by the Lieutenant Governor, warning that it could create unnecessary tension. "The nomination will not impact government formation, and independents who won are already in touch with us," he added, confident in the coalition's strength moving forward.
