A 22-year-old rape survivor was allegedly stabbed to death by the man accused of raping her after he was released on bail in Haryana’s Karnal district, police said. The incident took place in the Gharaunda area, where the accused allegedly attacked the woman with a knife, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Police arrested the accused following the killing and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the attack.
Pressure to withdraw case
According to police, the accused had earlier been booked for allegedly raping the woman and was subsequently arrested. He was later released on bail while the case remained pending. Investigators suspect that the killing was linked to the ongoing rape case. The accused had allegedly been pressuring the survivor to withdraw the complaint against him and attacked her after she refused to do so. The woman suffered multiple stab injuries during the assault. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and launched a search for the accused. He was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody. The weapon allegedly used in the crime is also being traced as part of the investigation.
Security concerns raised
The killing has once again raised concerns over the safety of survivors and witnesses in cases involving serious crimes, particularly when an accused is released on bail while proceedings are still underway. Police are examining whether the survivor or her family had previously reported threats or intimidation from the accused and whether any complaints were made seeking protection.
