The Gujarat government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Amazon to facilitate doorstep delivery of school textbooks without delivery charges, expanding access to books published by the Gujarat State School Textbook Board through an online platform. The agreement was signed on Wednesday in the presence of Gujarat Education Minister Dr Pradyuman Vaja and Minister of State for Education Dr Rivaba Jadeja. Under the arrangement, textbooks published by the state board will be available for purchase through Amazon, with customers not required to pay delivery charges.
The initiative is intended to make prescribed school books easier to obtain for students and parents across Gujarat, particularly those who may face difficulties accessing physical textbook distribution centres or authorised sellers.
Books to be available at prescribed prices
Under the agreement, Gujarat State School Textbook Board books will be listed on Amazon at prices fixed by the board. The online arrangement is aimed at ensuring that students can obtain prescribed books without paying an additional amount for doorstep delivery.
The government said the partnership would make textbook distribution more convenient and strengthen the existing system by providing families with another channel for purchasing books.
The initiative is expected to be particularly useful for people living in areas where access to bookshops or distribution centres is limited. Instead of travelling to locate particular textbooks, parents and students will be able to place orders online and receive them at their addresses.
The government has presented the arrangement as part of its effort to use technology and digital platforms to improve access to educational resources.
Government seeks wider textbook access
The Gujarat State School Textbook Board is responsible for publishing textbooks used by students following the state curriculum. Ensuring that books reach students on time is an important part of preparations for each academic session.
Traditional distribution depends on a network of vendors and sales centres. Adding an e-commerce platform gives students and parents another option, particularly when a specific book is unavailable locally.
Free delivery is a key component of the agreement because shipping charges on individual or small textbook orders could otherwise increase the effective cost for families.
The government said the collaboration would help ensure that books reach students at their homes while maintaining their prescribed prices.
Digital distribution complements existing network
The Amazon arrangement is not intended to replace the state's existing textbook distribution channels. Instead, the online facility will operate as an additional avenue through which students can obtain books.
The move reflects the increasing use of e-commerce and digital systems in public-service delivery, with governments turning to established logistics networks to improve the reach of essential material.
For students in remote locations, an online ordering option could reduce dependence on travel to larger towns or cities to find prescribed books. It could also help families obtain replacements during the academic year if books are lost or damaged.
The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on the availability of titles on the platform and the ability of the delivery network to reach different parts of Gujarat.
Education ministers hail initiative
The agreement was formalised in the presence of senior officials and representatives from the state government and Amazon.
The Gujarat government said the initiative was focused on making educational material more easily accessible while reducing inconvenience for students and their families.
By combining the State School Textbook Board's publishing and distribution system with Amazon's online marketplace and logistics network, the government expects to widen the reach of prescribed textbooks.
The initiative adds a digital doorstep-delivery option to Gujarat's school textbook distribution framework, allowing families to order required books online without an additional delivery charge.
