Two MLAs among six injured as cars collide near Delhi’s ITO

Kirari MLA Anil Jha and Karnataka legislator Abhay Patil suffer minor injuries after a car crosses the divider and crashes into their Innova

Two MLAs were among six people who suffered minor injuries after two cars collided near the PWD office in central Delhi on Saturday night, police said.

Anil Jha, the sitting MLA from Delhi’s Kirari constituency, and Karnataka MLA Abhay Patil were travelling in an Innova when another car crossed a road divider and crashed into their vehicle. Both legislators were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital and were stated to be stable.

The accident occurred around 9.30 pm near ITO, prompting police from the IP Estate police station to rush to the spot after receiving a PCR call.

Car crosses divider

According to a preliminary police inquiry, a car travelling from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO first struck the central divider. It then crossed the railing separating the carriageways and entered the opposite side of the road.

The vehicle subsequently collided with the Innova carrying Jha and Patil, which was travelling from ITO towards Laxmi Nagar.

Police identified the driver of the first car as 32-year-old Ashutosh Pandey. His wife and two minor children were travelling with him at the time of the accident.

Pandey and his family members also sustained minor injuries in the collision.

When police personnel reached the scene, they found both vehicles damaged. The six injured occupants were taken to LNJP Hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Police said none of the injuries was serious and all those involved were in stable condition.

Probe into crash

Investigators are examining how Pandey’s vehicle lost control and struck the divider before crossing into the opposite carriageway.

The preliminary inquiry has established the sequence of the collision, but police said further investigation was underway to determine the precise circumstances that caused the accident.

The stretch around ITO is among central Delhi’s busiest traffic corridors, connecting several major arterial roads and carrying heavy traffic between east and central Delhi.

Police are expected to examine the vehicles and other available evidence as part of the investigation into the crash.
