A 35-year-old man was injured after a Chinese “manjha” got entangled around his neck while he was riding a motorcycle in northeast Delhi’s Maujpur area on Saturday, police said. The incident is the third reported case involving kite strings in the national capital in the past 10 days.
The victim, identified as Gaurav Sharma, was taken to GTB Hospital after the incident. Police received information about his admission at around 2 pm.
According to a senior police officer, Sharma was at the Maujpur traffic signal when the stray kite string caught around his neck and slit his throat. He also fell from the motorcycle and suffered injuries. Passersby rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently out of danger.
Police said a case is being registered and raids are continuing against vendors allegedly selling Chinese manjha.
Teenager gets electric shock while flying kite
Another kite-related incident was reported from east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri on Saturday, where a 17-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after receiving an electric shock while flying a kite.
Police suspect the kite string came into contact with an overhead power line. DCP (East) Rajeev Kumar said, “The string came in contact with the 11kv power line in front of the house, and the boy suffered an electric shock. His family rushed him to the hospital,”
The teenager is undergoing treatment at GTB Hospital.
Police intensify crackdown on banned manjha
Delhi Police also carried out special drives against Chinese manjha on Independence Day. During one such operation, police arrested a resident of Rohini’s Begumpur after allegedly finding 80 rims of Chinese manjha in his possession, DCP (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal said.
The National Green Tribunal has banned Chinese manjha.
Two more incidents reported this month
The latest incidents follow two other cases in Delhi in the past 10 days.
On Wednesday, a three-year-old boy in Maujpur was injured when a loose kite string became entangled around his neck while he was travelling on a two-wheeler with his elder brother.
Earlier, on August 5, a 32-year-old businessman suffered serious injuries after a loose kite string slit his throat in Uttam Nagar while he was riding home from work on a motorcycle.
