Delhi witnessed a spell of heavy rain on Friday afternoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning for the capital to red, forecasting more rainfall along with thunderstorms.
The weather system also affected neighbouring areas. Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh were placed under an orange warning, according to the IMD's nowcast available around 3:30 pm. No warning was issued for Gurugram in Haryana at the time.
Delhi sees another wet spell
The rain came with temperatures remaining close to the seasonal average at several stations. Delhi's minimum temperature was recorded at 25.5 degree Celsius at Palam, 0.1 degrees above normal.
Lodhi Road recorded a minimum of 27.6 degree Celsius, which was 2.6 degrees above normal. The Ridge was cooler at 23.7 degrees, 0.5 degrees below normal, while Ayanagar recorded 27 degree Celsius, 2.3 degrees above normal.
The maximum temperature was expected to remain around 32 degree Celsius. Humidity stood at 75 per cent in the morning.
Delhi records above-normal August rain
Friday's downpour comes after an unusually wet August for the capital. Delhi received 354.1 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 30 until 5:30 pm, more than 120 mm above the IMD's long-period average of 233.1 mm for the month.
The capital had also recorded excess rainfall in August 2025 and 2024, receiving 400.81 mm and 390.3 mm, respectively. These were the first occasions since 2020 when August rainfall crossed the monthly average. Delhi received 237 mm in August 2020.
Since 2011, the capital has exceeded its August rainfall average only six times — in 2012, 2013, 2020, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Haryana sees slight August deficit
While Delhi recorded excess rainfall, Haryana registered its first August rainfall deficit in three years. The state received 138.5 mm against the normal 146.1 mm, a shortfall of 5 per cent.
Gurugram, however, recorded 217.4 mm against its normal 185.1 mm, marking a 17 per cent surplus. The district remained in the normal rainfall category, according to IMD data.
Between August 21 and 27, Gurugram received 66.5 mm of rain, 58 per cent above its normal weekly rainfall.
