Delhi Police assures FIR within 24 hours over alleged assault on NSUI women protesters

NSUI president Vinod Jakhar meets police officials, demands action against personnel accused of assaulting female members during Tuesday's protest

Delhi Police has verbally assured the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) that an FIR will be registered within 24 hours in connection with the alleged assault on its female members during a protest on Tuesday, the Congress-affiliated student organisation said on Wednesday.

NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar visited Parliament Street Police Station along with a delegation to demand immediate registration of a case against police personnel allegedly involved in the incident.

According to the organisation, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) assured the delegation that the FIR would be registered within 24 hours.

Jakhar warned that NSUI representatives would return to the police station on Thursday if the police failed to act within the promised timeframe.

The student organisation has alleged that its female members were assaulted by Delhi Police personnel while participating in Tuesday's demonstration.

Describing the allegations as serious, Jakhar demanded a fair investigation and strict action against those found responsible.

"The alleged assault on our female members is a serious matter that cannot be brushed aside. Our members were raising their voices, and they deserve justice, not violence," Jakhar said.

He maintained that the alleged incident raised questions about the treatment of women participating in democratic protests.

The NSUI president said the organisation would pursue the matter through legal and democratic channels until an FIR was registered and appropriate action initiated.

Jakhar said the delegation would revisit Parliament Street Police Station on Thursday if the assurance given by the senior police official was not honoured.

The organisation has demanded that the allegations be formally recorded and investigated, with accountability fixed for any misconduct established during the inquiry.

NSUI said the issue concerned the dignity and safety of its women members and that it would not allow the matter to be ignored.

The organisation reiterated that peaceful protesters must be able to exercise their democratic rights without fear of violence or intimidation.

The assurance of FIR registration was conveyed verbally, according to NSUI. There was no independent confirmation in the information provided that a case had been registered.

The organisation said it would continue pressing for action until its demands were addressed.
