Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday chaired a meeting with principals of Delhi University's women's colleges, senior police officials and civic authorities to discuss measures to strengthen student safety on and around college campuses. The meeting focused on addressing security concerns raised by students, particularly those relating to daily commuting, poorly lit roads and vulnerable public spaces near educational institutions.
The meeting formed part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Lieutenant Governor to review women's safety arrangements across the national capital. Sandhu has emphasised the importance of direct engagement with students and educational institutions to identify security gaps and ensure that the concerns of young women are addressed.
Focus on campus security and safe commuting
The discussions centred on improving security arrangements around women's colleges, strengthening police patrolling and addressing inadequate street lighting in surrounding areas. Particular attention was given to the safety of students travelling between their homes, public transport facilities and educational institutions.
The meeting followed Sandhu's recent visits to Indraprastha College for Women and interactions with students of Daulat Ram College, where he heard concerns about commuting safety and security around educational institutions. These interactions highlighted the need for coordinated action involving college administrations, Delhi Police and civic agencies.
Police and civic agencies directed to act
Earlier, during a high-level review meeting on September 28, Sandhu had directed Delhi Police to increase visible patrolling in vulnerable areas and strengthen engagement with students, college authorities and local communities. He had also instructed civic agencies to improve street lighting, eliminate dark spots and ensure adequate security arrangements in parks and other public spaces.
The Lieutenant Governor had asked senior police officers, including deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners and station house officers, to maintain regular communication with educational institutions. He emphasised that security concerns identified during these interactions should receive prompt attention.
The latest meeting reflected the administration's efforts to strengthen coordination between educational institutions, law enforcement agencies and civic authorities. The initiative seeks to improve safety not only within college campuses but also along the routes and public spaces regularly used by women students.
