The new tariff revision issued by the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission will have only a marginal impact on nearly 4.1 million of the state’s 5.1 million domestic consumers. The impact of the revision on these consumers will remain limited, ranging from zero to 3.65 percent. Farmers will not bear any additional burden, as the state government continues to absorb the cost. Under the new tariff, the average cost of power supply has been approved at ₹7.13 per unit, while domestic consumers in the minimum slab will receive electricity at an energy charge of only ₹4.40 per unit.
Managing Director of the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company, Mr. Bhim Singh Kanwar, said that electricity tariffs are determined by the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission, an independent regulatory body. Compared to the previous year, the new tariff incorporates a nominal consolidated increase of 6.23 percent, equivalent to 42 paise per unit.
For domestic consumers, electricity rates have been increased by 30 paise to 50 paise per unit. However, consumers will not bear the full impact of this increase, as compensation is provided by the state government under the Chief Minister’s Electricity Relief Scheme.
According to official data, out of approximately 5.1 million domestic consumers in the state, around 1.45 million Below Poverty Line (BPL) consumers receive up to 30 units of electricity free of cost, with the expenditure borne entirely by the government. Additionally, about 2.65 million consumers with monthly consumption of up to 400 units continue to receive a 50 percent rebate on consumption up to 200 units under the Chief Minister’s Electricity Relief Scheme.
As a result, the increase in electricity tariffs for the majority of domestic consumers in the state will remain between zero and 3.65 percent.
Mr. Kanwar further stated that, to help consumers reduce their electricity bills, subsidies are being provided by both the Central and State Governments for the installation of rooftop solar systems under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Yojana. The scheme aims to reduce household dependence on grid electricity and ensure savings in energy expenditure.
