The BJP on Tuesday announced its candidates for four of the eight legislative council seats in Bihar going to polls next month, with three sitting MLCs seeking re-election from their respective constituencies.
The JD(U), the second largest constituent of the ruling NDA in Bihar, has already announced its candidates for the other four constituencies.
BJP names four candidates
BJP MLCs Nawal Kishor Yadav, N K Yadav and Sarvesh Kumar will seek re-election from Patna Teachers, Kosi Graduates and Tirhut Graduates seats, respectively.
The party has fielded Narendra Kumar Singh for the Tirhut Teachers constituency, which is held by Sanjay Kumar Singh of the opposition INDIA bloc's CPI.
The RJD, which helms the opposition coalition in Bihar, has declared its candidates for six of the seats. It had said that "talks are underway" for the Tirhut Teachers constituency as well as the Darbhanga Teachers seat, held by former state Congress chief Madan Mohan Jha.
On the other hand, the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party has named its candidates for all the eight legislative council seats which go to polls on October 23.
Poll schedule for eight seats
The terms of the sitting members of these constituencies expire on November 16.
The notification for the elections will be issued on September 29, while the last date for filing nominations is October 6. Scrutiny will be held on October 7, and candidates can withdraw their nominations till October 9.
Polling will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on October 23, with counting scheduled for October 27.
Voter eligibility for council polls
For the Graduates' constituencies, those who have held a graduate degree from a recognised university in India for at least three years and reside in the constituency concerned are eligible to vote.
Similarly, for the Teachers' constituencies, those with at least three years of teaching experience in secondary schools, colleges and universities can vote. In both cases, the voters must be registered on the electoral rolls prepared for the purpose.
