BJP MLA Ritu Baran Sarmah was allegedly attacked by a truck driver who was under the influence in Assam's Sonitpur district on Saturday, with a video of the incident circulating widely on social media.
Driver allegedly pulls out dagger after truck hits vehicle
The incident took place in front of Sarmah's office when the truck rammed a parked vehicle belonging to a BJP worker. The MLA, who represents the Barchalla constituency, was present at the spot along with some party workers.
Sarmah said he and the party workers initially spoke calmly to the driver and tried to defuse the situation. However, the driver, who was allegedly drunk, pulled out a dagger from the truck and attempted to attack them.
Crowd intervenes as driver lunges at MLA
A video of the incident showed the driver lunging at the MLA and his associates even as a crowd tried to restrain him.
Locals who had gathered at the spot then thrashed the driver before handing him over to the police.
MLA unharmed, three others reportedly injured
Sarmah was not injured in the alleged attack. However, a Home Guard and two party workers were reportedly injured.
Sarmah is the BJP MLA from Barchalla in Sonitpur. Current Assam Assembly records also list him as the representative of the constituency.
