Sports Ministry clears 492 athletes for Asian Games, athletics gets 73 spots

The Sports Ministry has approved 492 Indian athletes for the Asian Games, with athletics accounting for the largest group of 73 competitors

The Sports Ministry on Saturday approved a 492-strong Indian contingent for the Asian Games, which will begin next month in Japan.

The contingent comprises 265 male and 227 women athletes. The Ministry has not yet issued the list of support staff that will accompany the athletes.

Athletics gets biggest share

Athletics forms the largest group in the contingent, with 73 athletes — 35 men and 38 women.

The athletics squad includes two-time Olympic medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, decathlete Tejaswin Shankar and 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, among others.

Sindhu, Lakshya in badminton squad

The 20-member badminton team features several established names, including P V Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen.

The women's doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly has also been selected. The men's doubles combination of Satwik Sairaj Renkireddy and Chirag Shetty is part of the squad as well.

Boxing, esports and rowing teams

The boxing contingent comprises 11 athletes, including recent Commonwealth Games silver medallists Lovlina Borgohain in the 75kg category, Narender Berwal in the +90kg category and Jadumani Singh in the 55kg category.

India will also have 15 athletes in Esports and 22 rowers at the Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

The Sports Ministry's approval covers the athletes' contingent, while details of the support staff are yet to be announced.
