Marc Marquez strengthened his MotoGP title challenge with a commanding victory at the Aragon Grand Prix, completing a perfect weekend at MotorLand and cutting Jorge Martin’s championship advantage to just 19 points. The Ducati Lenovo rider overcame an eventful opening lap before getting the better of Marco Bezzecchi and resisting pressure from Pedro Acosta to claim his third successive Grand Prix victory.
Marquez’s triumph, coupled with his Sprint victory on Saturday, earned him the maximum 37 points available from the weekend and lifted him to second in the championship standings.
Early error sparks fierce battle
Starting second behind polesitter Bezzecchi, Marquez made an excellent launch and briefly moved into the lead. However, an error involving his rear ride-height device caused him to lose ground, allowing Bezzecchi and championship leader Martin to move ahead.
The setback proved temporary. Marquez quickly recovered and worked his way back into contention before producing one of the race’s defining moments against Bezzecchi.
The pair went wheel-to-wheel at more than 300kmph on the back straight, with Marquez eventually gaining the advantage. Acosta seized the opportunity to sweep past Bezzecchi as well and move into second.
The KTM rider remained close to Marquez during the middle stages and matched the eight-time world champion’s pace for several laps. However, Marquez gradually found another gear and began stretching his advantage.
Acosta eventually settled for second, finishing 1.7 seconds behind the Ducati rider, while Bezzecchi completed the podium in third.
Title race tightens
Alex Marquez finished fourth, ahead of championship leader Martin in fifth. The result proved particularly significant for Marc Marquez, who gained valuable ground on the Aprilia rider in the title battle.
Marquez now has 237 points and has climbed to second in the standings, 19 behind Martin. Bezzecchi sits third with 232 points.
The victory also continued Marquez’s remarkable record at MotorLand Aragon, where he has traditionally excelled on the anti-clockwise layout.
After a difficult British Grand Prix, the Spaniard responded emphatically in Aragon, collecting all 37 available points and putting himself firmly back into championship contention.
With the title fight tightening, attention now turns to the next round at Misano, where Marquez will attempt to maintain his momentum and further reduce Martin’s advantage.
