Seventeen-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi scripted a landmark moment for Indian tennis on Wednesday, becoming the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach the singles quarterfinals of a WTA Tour-level tournament after defeating Polish qualifier Weronika Falkowska in straight sets at the Chennai Open.
Ranked 669th in the world, Maaya overcame a player ranked 392 places above her, securing a 6-4, 6-3 victory over world No. 277 Falkowska in the second round.
The result ended a nearly 15-year wait for an Indian woman to reach the last eight of a WTA Tour singles event. Sania was the previous Indian to achieve the feat, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Pattaya Open in February 2012.
Maaya also became the first Indian player to progress beyond the second round of the Chennai Open in its three editions.
The teenager's achievement marks another significant step in her emergence on the professional circuit, following a breakthrough season that has already seen her capture her maiden professional singles title.

Maaya's victory was far from straightforward, with both players struggling for consistency in a contest marked by frequent service breaks, double faults and unforced errors.
The Indian began nervously, opening the match with a double fault before surrendering her serve following a series of errors.
She immediately recovered the break as Falkowska struggled with her returns, but Maaya's low first-serve percentage allowed the Polish qualifier to attack her second serve.
Falkowska broke again with a cross-court winner after Maaya attempted to approach the net.
The opening set developed into an unpredictable contest, featuring five consecutive breaks of serve before Falkowska finally held to love and established a 4-2 lead.
Maaya, however, refused to retreat from her attacking approach. She broke back and then held serve to move ahead 5-4, putting pressure on the Polish player.
Falkowska faltered at the crucial moment, committing two double faults and a forehand error to concede two set points.
Maaya squandered the first opportunity when her backhand sailed long but converted the second after Falkowska sent a cross-court attempt wide.
The turnaround gave the Indian the opening set 6-4 despite her inconsistent start.

The second set followed a similar pattern as Falkowska attempted to dictate exchanges with heavier groundstrokes, while Maaya continued to rely on aggressive shot-making.
Although both players struggled to establish complete control, the Indian displayed greater composure during the important points.
With the set evenly contested, Maaya secured a decisive break in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead.
Serving for the match, she faced resistance from Falkowska but maintained her attacking approach.
The teenager eventually converted her third match point when the Polish player sent a forehand into the net, completing the victory in straight sets.
The result underlined Maaya's ability to recover from setbacks and remain competitive against higher-ranked opponents.

Maaya's performance in Chennai follows a successful October in which she won her maiden W35 singles title in Lagos, Portugal.
Competing as a qualifier, she captured the title without dropping a set, demonstrating her growing confidence on the professional circuit.
She also won the doubles title alongside Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Kotliar, becoming the youngest Indian player to capture a professional singles title since Sania Mirza.
The teenager recently moved from the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain to the Elite Tennis Center in southern France as part of her continuing development.
Her progress has generated considerable interest in Indian tennis, which has been searching for a consistent presence in women's singles at the highest level since Sania's retirement from singles competition.

In other women's singles matches, sixth seed Polina Kudermetova defeated Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-3, 6-0, while Robin Montgomery overcame Jeline Vandromme 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Top seed Janice Tjen advanced with a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory over Joanna Garland.
In the women's doubles competition, India's Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale defeated Madeleine Brooks and Amelia Rajecki 6-4, 6-4 to progress to the quarterfinals.
However, Diya Ramesh and D Vinayagamurthy lost 2-6, 2-6 to Nahia Karamoko and Simona Waltert.
Ankita Raina and her partner Hiroko Kuwata also exited after suffering a 1-6, 1-6 defeat against Georgina Da Silva Fick and Zhibek Kulambayeva.
For Indian tennis, however, the day's defining moment belonged to Maaya, whose victory has brought the country back into the quarterfinals of a WTA Tour singles tournament after a prolonged absence.
