India win six athletics medals, including three gold, at Asian Para Games

Nishad Kumar strikes gold on long jump debut, while Soumya and Rinku lead India's impressive opening-day performance

India's para track and field athletes made an impressive start to their Asian Para Games campaign on Monday, winning six medals, including three gold, as Nishad Kumar, Rinku and Soumya emerged victorious in their respective events at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

India finished the opening day of athletics competitions with three gold, two silver and one bronze, behind hosts Japan, who collected eight medals comprising three gold, three silver and two bronze.

The Indian contingent also registered two one-two finishes, with Soumya and Radha Venkatesh taking the top two positions in the women's 1500m T12/T13 event, while Rinku and Ajeet Singh dominated the men's javelin throw F46 competition.

Two-time Paralympic silver-medallist Nishad Kumar opened India's athletics gold medal account with a commanding performance in the men's long jump T47 event.

The 27-year-old recorded identical jumps of 7.11m in his third and fifth attempts to secure the top position, making his achievement particularly remarkable as it was his first competitive appearance in the long jump.

Nishad, who won gold in the high jump T47 event at the previous Asian Para Games in China, will also compete in his preferred high jump event at the ongoing Games.

Uzbekistan's Omadbek Khasanov claimed silver with 6.99m, while Sri Lanka's Mohammadu Safran secured bronze with an effort of 6.55m.

The T47 classification is designated for athletes with upper limb impairments.

Nishad, who hails from Amb in Himachal Pradesh, lost his right arm in an accident involving a grass-cutting machine at his family's farm when he was six years old.

Soumya delivered another gold medal for India in the women's 1500m T12/T13 event on her Asian Para Games debut, while compatriot Radha Venkatesh secured silver.

Soumya clocked 5 minutes and 12.39 seconds, running alongside guide Kumar Bharath, while Radha finished in 5:30.90 with guide Govind Solanki.

Japan's Mana Sasaki registered a faster time of 5:12.15 but was placed third under the combined T12/T13 points system used to determine the final standings.

The event combines classifications for athletes with different levels of visual impairment, with results adjusted through a points-based system to ensure competition across the categories.

Soumya entered the Games after winning gold at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi earlier this year.

In another event for visually impaired athletes, India's Ravanni Valasanaini secured bronze in the women's T11 category after compatriot Rakshitha Raju, initially placed third, was disqualified for a technical violation relating to competition requirements covering clothing, shoes and bibs.

The T11 classification covers athletes with total or near-total blindness, while T12 and T13 apply to athletes with progressively lesser degrees of visual impairment.

Rinku delivered India's third athletics gold of the day with a narrow victory over compatriot Ajeet Singh in the men's javelin throw F46 event.

Rinku produced a best throw of 65.11m to secure the title, edging Ajeet by just nine centimetres in a closely contested battle for the top position.

Ajeet claimed silver with an effort of 65.02m, completing India's second one-two finish of the day.

Indonesia's R Saktyono, the only other competitor in the three-athlete field, took bronze with a throw of 55.30m.

The F46 category is for athletes with a single above-elbow or below-elbow amputation, or an equivalent upper limb impairment.

The six-medal haul underlined India's strength across jumping, throwing and middle-distance running events on the opening day of para-athletics competition.

With Nishad also scheduled to participate in the high jump T47 event, the Indian contingent will look to build on its early success as the athletics programme progresses.

The opening-day performances placed India among the leading nations in the athletics medal standings, with the contingent matching Japan's three gold medals despite the hosts finishing ahead in the overall medal count.
