Portugal suspend Cristiano Ronaldo after national team walkout, final punishment awaited

Portugal have suspended Ronaldo pending a final decision after his squad exit amid a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, while the forward has returned to scoring for Al-Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after disciplinary proceedings were initiated against the 41-year-old forward over his decision to leave the national team squad. The federation announced the development on Saturday, classifying the case as "urgent" while it considers the final punishment.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo," the FPF said in a statement, confirming that the Portugal captain remains suspended pending a decision on the penalty.

Ronaldo had earlier apologised to supporters over the incident while criticising Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star also said he was prepared to accept the consequences of his actions.

Why did Ronaldo leave Portugal's squad?

The controversy followed Ronaldo's treatment during Portugal's Nations League campaign. He was asked to warm up as a substitute during the match against Norway on September 27 but was not brought on. He subsequently learnt that he would not start against Denmark on October 1.

The decisions reportedly prompted the forward to walk out on the national team, triggering disciplinary action from the federation.

On Tuesday, Ronaldo accused coach Jesus of going back on his word about giving him playing time in the Nations League matches. However, he made it clear that he had no intention of retiring from international football.

"I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo said, adding that his actions should be "punished" by the federation.

The Portugal captain's comments indicated that he remained committed to representing his country despite the fallout with the coach.

Ronaldo returns to scoring for Al-Nassr

While the disciplinary case remains pending, Ronaldo has returned to club football with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. He featured on Friday and scored in their 3-0 victory over Diriyah in a Saudi Pro League match.

Ronaldo remains Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer and record appearance-maker, making the disciplinary proceedings a significant development for the national team.

Portugal, meanwhile, have enjoyed a strong Nations League campaign, winning all four of their matches and securing qualification for the quarter-finals with two games to spare.

The FPF is yet to announce the final punishment for Ronaldo. The outcome will determine the consequences he must serve before returning to international duty.
